Finger DJ

Nice idea for an ad! Anyone? Anyone?...

Ahh there we go!

A new ad for some kinda Cheezle-like chips called 'Hula Hoops'. I think it's cute! It definitely reflects a truth about the product – no matter how old you are you can't help poking your fingers through them and feeling like a big kid. :)

My favourites of this week's BestAds

are as follows.. :)

A print ad from Ogilvy Cape Town for the new Golf 6, which features special sound dampening measures that give it the "quietest cabin in its class. New Golf."

To coincide with the solar eclipse, a topical ad was developed for Michael Hill Jewellers by McCann-Erickson, Sydney.

Steal our ideas

Freaking awesome :D

"This ambient idea for Altoids will challenge people to investigate their innate inquisitive nature at the risk of being crushed to death by a 2000 pound cliche. Those who muster up enough curiosity to push the giant red button will be handsomely rewarded with a sample package of Altoids Curiously Strong Mints."
hahahahahahahah

"The fashion world takes itself way too seriously, but Diesel is an exception. They have done a remarkable job mixing humor and sexiness. ”You’ll never be this awesome.” is a confident and self-deprecative strategy that speaks to the unattainable beauty of the fashion industry."

Ahhh Schweppervescence

The countdown to the 56th Cannes Lions Internation Advertising Festival is on, with only 3 weeks to go! Just watching a videoblog on Campaign Brief from Cannes 2008, and was reminded of this awesome ad for Schweppes! It won a Gold Lion (as it should) and was shot with ultra slow motion cameras capturing the footage at a massive 10,000 frames per second. It's so beautiful, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D haha!

Another 2008 Cannes Gold Lion winner...

Gold :D

Simon McQuoid

Last night I was amongst many who went to Double Lucky to listen to Simon McQuoid talk about his career, his philosophies and give an insight into his work. Simon worked as an Art Director in Perth in the 1990s, and returns to Perth every couple of years for holidays from his base in New York where he is one of America's hottest directors. In the past year he has risen to #3 in the world in The Gunn Report rankings.

Simon was the director of the highly awarded Microsoft Xbox 360 / "Halo 3" video game internet campaign named one of the two Film Grand Prix' at Cannes in 2008.
He showed some of his awesome work for HBO - The Sopranos, the launch of Blu Ray, an LG mobile ad, Holiday Inn Express and of course Xbox Halo.
Some interesting comments:
“Nothing ever comes to me in a perfect state. It's a battle no matter what. Every job is labour intensive. Make every single job an opportunity.”
“The ones with the biggest problems are the ones that end up on my reel”
”Be honest but polite” (when faced with a challenging client)
You can view some of his work here.

Some favourites of his work.. in order of preference :D

Holiday Inn Express
My favourite ad of all that he showed us! Could not stop laughing. The search for the perfect actor was a hard one, they cast in LA and Boston over a number of days and went through about 600 people when they found this guy. He looks a bit like Steve Carell. Apparantly the guy that they chose to do this ad was way too 'cool' so they had to put a fat suit on him and give him a combover to appear nerdier. This ad turned out to be such a huge hit that they ran it in Cinema and on the opening of Saturday Night Live where they usually play the SNL Skits.. and everyone thought it was one! The last part of the rap (the best part) he actually made up himself. ("Now how you gonna let a marketing rep rip ya rep...") Best. ad. ever. !

HBO Sopranos
This was for HBO to promote The Sopranos on DVD. For this ad, Simon didn't want people to act, he wanted them to actually cry. So he spent two days in casting, watching over 300 people crying. (!) As they shortlisted people for the spots, he asked them to tell him the most emotional piece of music that would make them cry. Once he got these songs, he downloaded them onto an ipod and set up a motor home next to the set on the day to play it right before they shot each scene. Apparently the girl in the first shot was beside herself and was crying uncontrollably! He sort of just let them do their thing as he didn't want to interfere and ruin their moment 'in the zone'! I liked the way this way put together.. how melodramatic!

Reversed Beliefs

This video was forwarded to me at work.. it has so much impact!
Apparently.... this video was submitted by a 20 year old in a contest titled "u @ 50"
It won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause.

Canon ad

One of my old favourites.

The beginning for Kodak

I've been sifting through a load of old print ads today, many dating back from the 1850's! Some are hilarious, the copy they used is priceless.. one of my favourites for Palmolive Soap:

"Palmolive's Beauty Plan brings exciting complexion loveliness" ...

What the! Also, Lose weight with Aids!? Gold!

Haha anyway, I came across a whole load of them for Kodak, which reminded me of a page in one of Paul Arden's books.. I read both of his bestselling paperbacks, "Whatever you think, think the opposite", and "It's not how good you are, it's how good you want to be".

Freaking amazing books, I think they should be supplementary textbooks for creative courses at uni!

In one of my favourite pages, he tells us about the beginning of Kodak as a brand:

"In 1881, George Eastman, a junior clerk, left his safe job in a local bank to start a photographic company.

But here is the interesting part..
Seven years later, he changed its name to "Kodak", an odd choice, since it was meaningless and nobody in those days gave random names to serious products.

Eastman's reasons for choosing the name were:
firstly, that it was short;
secondly, that it was not capable of mispronunciation; and,
thirdly, that it could not be associated with anything else.

Even today, corporations cannot think like that.
Only entrepreneurs can."

Apple.. My favourite brand

I remember reading about this back when I was 15. I was always in love with the Apple Ipod ads, and used to make my own versions - haha! The tagline was something like.. "Life is random.. and so is Michelle!"
I'll see if I can find them.. They'd be funny to laugh at now :P

LIFE IS RANDOM: (2003)
Apple Computers unveiled their new portable music player called the iPod Shuffle. Those who wish to remain in control of the order in which their music is played will not be able to stand the device, as it can only play music in the order by which it was added to the player or in shuffle mode. This gave the ad campaign the slick slogan of "Life is Random." The word Random, a harmless enough word, has crept into the popular vocabulary as an all-purpose word, often used to describe things that are not random or are simply strange. It has become overused and clichéd, taking the place of several fine adjectives that work equally as well, if not better, by themselves.

Other versions of this ad:
- skateboards
- rollerskates
- breakdancing
- skipping
